Distinguished and Famous people from Murrindindi

🤝 Pattie Menzies

Pattie Menzies was born at Alexandra in 1899, the eldest daughter of John and May Leckie. She rode a pony to the local one-teacher school before continuing her education in Melbourne. Marriage to Robert Menzies later placed her at the centre of a long political household, but she also developed her own charitable work, including support for the Royal Children’s and Royal Melbourne hospitals. The Alexandra beginning offers a more personal perspective than a list of official occasions: the future prime minister’s wife first knew a country schoolroom and the practical journey needed to reach it.

🎨 Bruno Torfs

Bruno Torfs created an art and sculpture garden at Marysville, placing imaginative figures among the trees and gardens. The Black Saturday bushfire of February 2009 destroyed his home and gallery and devastated the surrounding community. He survived and chose to remain, rebuilding his home and restoring the garden. The work’s mixture of fantasy and humour therefore sits alongside a serious story of loss and persistence. His local contribution is not simply an exhibition brought to town: it is a sustained creative undertaking whose rebuilding became part of Marysville’s recovery.

⚖️ Condon Byrne

Condon Byrne was born at Yea in 1910 before schooling and a public-service career took him to Queensland. He became a barrister and later represented Queensland in the Senate, first for Labor and then for the Democratic Labor Party. Even opponents respected his courteous debating style. At seventeen he had already written to a newspaper objecting to hostile barracking against a visiting rugby league team, arguing that hospitality mattered. After parliamentary defeat he returned to legal practice in Brisbane. Changes of party and sharp political divisions did not erase his belief that disagreement could still be conducted with good manners.
